Big Day at Big RedPosted Sunday, September 13, 2009 by Canis Latrans Early season invitationals, like the Big Red, are a good time, not only to see how your summer training is paying off, but also what you might have to work on over the next couple of months. In this case, it was also a good opportunity to learn the lay of the land, as this year, the Somers course will be the site of the Westchester County Championships at the end of the season.
The freshman boys fielded a full team and really did a good job on the 2500 meter course. Brett Pastore got boxed at the start, but managed to break out and had another terrific race finishing 4th in 8:41. Joe Riley also did very well on the course, finishing well up at 25th in 9:39. The other freshman boys had solid races with Robert Williamson-Noble taking 39th in 9:57, Louis Agro, 54th in 10;18 and Nick O'Conor, 56th in 10:23, out of a field of over 100 runners. The freshman girls were not to be outdone when it was their turn to run. Charlotte Follari led a very tight Bulldog pack to the finish line taking 9th overall in 11;43 with Courtney Buell right behind, 10th, in 11;44 and Kiera Murphy 11th, just tenths behind her. Alexandra Silvestre, who started later in the season showed improvement taking 33rd in 14:02. In the varsity boys race the Dawgs ran well with Julian Saliani coming in third in a fast 16:43. Denis Montaruli again showed just how improved a runner getting under 18 minutes for the first time and finishing an impressive 16th in 17;58. Sam Lindberg had a solid race to take 27th in 18:33 with Sean Lippin showing some speed, coming in 40th in 19:07. Taira Davey had another great race, coming in fifth for the team and 45th overall, in 19;19. Zach Siegel had a solid race, sixth for team and 53rd overall in 19:32. There was more excitement back in the pack as Logan Muise had another terrific race to grab the 7th team position and 72nd overall in 20:30. Reid Mitchell again had another strong outing coming in 101st in 21:41. Mac O'Conor was 127th in 22:52 and Josh Bloom took 171st place with a good effort in 24:53 and Kamran Saliani was 176th in 25:07 in a field of over 200 runners. The team was fourth overall, just behind a strong and much improved Pawling team. The girls varsity race was also a large group of over 100 runners. Harrison's outstanding senior Emily Singer moved to the front early and stayed there to win in 19:18. Annie Field had a strong finish to take sixth place in 21:05. Sasha Zwiebel was very impressive, running another very strong race to come in 20th in 22:57. Christina Paparo and Megan Talay were not far behind, improving their pack finish, with Christina taking 22nd in 23:24 and Megan 25th in 23:36. Julia Canning also showed growth with her strong run placing her 32nd in 24:15. Liz Hevern's solid effort garnered 37th in 24:41, while Lindsay Shapiro was impressive taking 43rd in 25:39. Sara Moore was 57th in 26;49 and Clara Foung continues to show much improvement as she came in steps behind Sara in an identical 26:49. Just about the entire team ran in the top 50% of the field and like the boys finished 4th overall. Pawlings boys and girls varsity showed much improvement and depth making them a major player in Section 1. Our teams all had solid outings and with continued growth, we can look forward to an exciting post season at both the county and the sectional championships. Next on the schedule is the league meet at Woodlands, this Tuesday. |
