Girls Grab Gressler Gold!

Posted Tuesday, September 29, 2009 by Canis Latrans
It was a chilly 7AM departure from the high school, but things warmed up once the racing started at the Fred Gressler Invitational at White Plains. Officials had altered the course, removing that gut wrenching vertical finish, though they left plenty of twists and turns in the course.
Boys Varsity went off first and it was a dog fight up front with Marmaroneck's Tommy Vandenburg, which ended abruptly about halfway into the race, as Julian Saliani moved away from the field. Though still conscious that his ankle wasn't fully healed, he still managed to finish well out in front of the field. Sam Lindberg had a strong race to take 7th and Dennis Montaruli, who later turned out to have a hip problem, gutted out an excellent 11th place. Taira Davey looked much stronger than earlier in the season, as he took 17th place, followed closely by Sean Lippin who's also doing better as the season goes along, in 20th place. Logan Muise and Reid Mitchell both had very good showings in their first varsity 7 effort with Logan finishing 38th and Reid, 50th. The team had an excellent average speed, the best of the meet, but Mamaroneck took first place honors by 4 points, thanks to a great 3-5 pack finish.
Girls Varsity was up next and they had a great outing. Despite missing Captain Megan Talay and Annie Field recovering from last weeks illness, the Lady Bulldogs managed to pack it in, up front. Annie dualed with Nicki Nesi from Pelham and Gina Talt from Mamaroneck for most of the early part of the race, but with her tank running low showed great heart and determination to stay up with the leaders taking 3rd. Edwina Picon had another terrific day finishing strongly to take 6th, right behind White Plains' Trelstad twins. Not far behind was Christina Paparo and Sasha Zwiebel. Sasha, who's been having a terrific season, thus far finished right on the heals of Paparo, who had one of her best races this year to finish 12th. Liz Hevern ran a solid race from start to finish for the teams fifth position and 22nd overall. Lindsay Shapiro continued to impress in her first cross country season taking 6th for the team and 28th overall, with Julia Canning running well to take 33rd. The improved running throughout the pack gave the girls team First Place as they finished 6 points ahead of the White Plains Class A team.
The fireworks were not over yet! The Boys Freshman went out next and there was plenty of dicing going on. Brett Pastore was getting bounced bounced around like a pinball at the beginning and it took him awhile to get some running room, but once he did, the Clarkstown North duo of Raquet and O'Neill spent the second half of the race staring at his back. Brett had a great run to win the Freshman race. Also having great days were Joe Riley, who has been consistantly strong all season taking 7th place and Rob Williamson-Noble, looking better with every meet finishing 18th out of 39 runners.
The Girls Freshwomen were not going to be outdone by the boys. They were up next and it was deja vu all over again. Courtney Buell was among those chasing the early leader, Alexandra Smith of White Plains. Halfway through the race, Courtney took the lead and never, figuratively, looked back. She ran strongly to take First by a healthy margin over Notre Dame's Vanessa Hannifin. Kira Murphy, almost made it a 1-2 finish as she came in right behind Hannifin to take third place. Alexandra Silvestre ran a steady pace and finished 17th.
Boys JV went out next and the Clarkstown South team rolled out another string of great runners who moved out to the front early. Clarkstown dominated the race with 6 runners finishing in the top ten. Zach Siegel, recovering from an illness and with little training this past week, helped break up the pack taking 4th place. Thomas Lindberg ran well as he finished 18th followed by Greg Kalvin and Andrew O'Conor who were 32nd and 35th. Noah Turret was 71st to finish the Bulldog scoring, in what was one of the biggest fields of the day, 86. The JV boys did well to take 6th place out of 15 teams!
Last race for the team was the JV girls. It was a smaller field and we only had three runners in it but they all ran very well. Aislinn Raftis ran well and looked good to take third, with Co-Captain Sara Moore right behind to take 4th. Clara Foung continued to run well as she has all season and finished 9th. A great run for all three girls.
Next up, is Ardsley and Eastchester at Ardsley and then the trip to L.I. for the St.Anthony's Invitational at Sunken Meadow.
