St. Anthony's Fire

Posted Monday, October 05, 2009 by Canis Latrans
There is something about our trips to Long Island for the St.Anthony's Invitational that brings out the best in our team. Maybe it's the scenic background, that encompasses, sea shore, marshland, sandy paths and amazing vertical changes. Perhaps it's the weather which has ranged from hot and sunny to drizzly and cold and everything in between. Whatever the cause, the team always seems to step up for this event.
Race officials changed the course Saturday to the original 2.5 mile layout. Previously, we had only run the full 5K course which had been laid out and run for several years prior to the states being held there last year. This was a pleasent surprise for many runners.
The freshmen races were held first and our freshmen showed what to expect from the rest of the team that day. Brett Pastore ran another very strong race to take fifth among the boys while Courtney Buell and Kira Murphy had excellent medal runs to finish 8th and 13th respectively.
When the boys small schools varsity race started, they were led by the Bulldog's Julian Saliani, Manhasset's Joseph Nassirian, Seaford's Joe Lasher and Rye's Max Robinson. The race was a good one throughout the field as runners stayed pretty closely packed through the first mile. Coming out of Heartbreak Hill Saliani began to open some space between himself and the other lead runners and the field, in general, began to open up, providing more running room. Going into the last 200 yards, Julian had widen a gap the others couldn't close and he finished unchallenged, some 100 yards in front of Manhasset's Nassirian who held off Lasher for 2nd.
Dennis Montaruli and Sam Lindberg both looked very strong as they followed in at 21st and 23rd. Sean Lippin showed his improved conditioning with a good run to take 31st, while Taira Davey also ran very well for 37th. Zach Siegel, coming back after being out a week, also had a very good race, coming in 49th. When the points were added up the boys were third out of 14 teams, just behind Class B Manhasset and Class A Harborfields.
The girls were up next and even though Bronxville was missing their top runner, they were the favorites and showed it, as they packed the top twenty runners at the start. Annie Field, also coming back after being sick, was running easily in the sea of blue and waited for Heartbreak Hill before making her move. Coming into the flats, she was running,  just behind Michelle Gaye of Harborfields and as the leaders all lock stepped to the finish with no change in order, she held her spot for an excellent 4th place. Behind her, Edwinna Picon had another great race as she ran strongly for 17th place. Sasha Zwiebel was outstanding, taking third for the team and 23rd overall. Co-Captain, Megen Talay, also recovering from illness showed she was returning to form as she finished 30th. Christina Paparo ran strongly as always and took 37th, while Julia Canning had another good run to finish ahead of midpack at 51st place. The girls had an excellent day to take 4th out of 14 schools.
The JV teams finished off the races and as in the previous races, Irvington runners did very well. In the boys jv, the Junior Dawgs were in one of the biggest fields of the day with almost 150 runners leaving the starting line. Reid Mitchell ran really well to take 38th, the top jv finish. Thomas Lindberg also ran very well and was just behind in 40th place. Andrew O'Conor had a good day taking third team position and 54th overall. Greg Kalvin was fourth for the team and 65th overall and Mac O'Conor ran strongly to take fifth for the team and 80th overall. Josh Bloom ran well for 105th and Kamran Saliani battled to the finish to take 130th. The JV Boys were 7th out of 14 teams in the race.
The JV Girls went out just one person short of a complete team, in what was the biggest field of the day with 183 starters. It was too bad because the four Lady Dawgs had a really good run with Aislinn Raftis leading the way with an excellent run finishing 28th. Sara Moore ran strongly for 46th. Lindsay Shapiro was great, just 10 runners back at 56th and Clara Foung ran well to take 87th as all four girls finished above mid field and probably would have placed well as a team.
Next on schedule is final league meet against Sleepy Hollow at Rockwell Hall on Tuesday. This will be a good race to come to because it will be the site of this years league championships later in the post season.
