Wish I Lost My InvitationPosted Tuesday, October 27, 2009 by Canis Latrans Weather doesn't get much worse than it did for the Coaches Invitational at Bowdoin this past weekend. More accurately, the weather doesn't affect the course much worse than it did this last Saturday. Between the multiple races and the unfortunate habit of teams warming up on the race course in between races, the Bowdoin cross country event was anything but firm under foot. The later your race, the worse it got, reflected in longer times around this challenging course.
Going off first, the girls got the first chance to enjoy the mud and periods of heavy rain. This race was full of strong runners, as were all the races and the Lady Bulldogs did very well. Annie Field running at the back of the lead pack waited patiently until the halfway mark and then started picking off runners, one at a time and came in 11th overall. On a day when the team went out without Captain Megan Talay, the other girls worked hard to fill in. Christina Paparo got out very fast but did well holding her position in the back half, showing she's recovering nicely from a week of illness and missed practise. Julia Canning looked strong around the course too. Edwina Picon had another very good race, though this reporter thought this would have been the perfect event for her scarf/headband...maybe at counties. Courtney Buell continued her impressive season with a third place team finish against very strong competition. Overall, the girls team did very well to place third amongst Class C teams, sixth against Westchester teams and 23rd out of 51 teams despite being without two of their top five runners, Talay and Sasha Zwiebel. Considering the conditions and missing teammates, it was a very good day. The boys went out in the same slippery mix, lots of mud and rain against some very tough competition. Some nationally ranked runners and local favorites like Manu Kumar from Yorktown. The boys got a good jump at the start with Julian Saliani running well in the middle of the front pack. It was a large field and a little bit back, Dennis Montaruli was already mud splattered in the crowd. Further along Sam Lindberg and Taira Davey seemed lost in the mass. Zach Siegel was running well behind them and Sean Lippin was easy to spot with his signature hand warmers. About halfway in, Kumar made a move towards the leaders but was surprised to have most of the front runners surge with him. The Bulldogs all were moving well and moving up as the race progressed. At the finish, Julian stunned the crowd, opening a lead on the other runners to take second overall, the fastest Westchester runner in the race and second fastest Westchester time of the day (Rye's Max Robinson had a great race earlier in the day). Dennis Montaruli bounced back from stomach problems last week to finish very well at second for the team and seventh of Class C runners. Sam, Taira, and Zach all ran well finishing well above the mid pack along with Sean. Next up, the County Championship, which this year will be held on the Somers course on Saturday. |
