Dawg Tired!Posted Thursday, November 05, 2009 by Canis Latrans Okay, this article is late...way late, considering Sectionals are being run tomorrow. With full moon in play, have been spending a lot of time just baying away the time...sorry for delay.
The county championships were held this year on Somer's very challenging course. Lots of elevation changes, often coming up, it seemed, when runners were already tired. However, it was more accessible to supporters, who had multiple viewing sites and, in my opinion, a much better venue than Van Cortlandt Park. Would certainly like to see it used again next year. (Though those who had to run there might feel otherwise.) Understand, the counties, unlike tomorrow's sectional championships, are not run by class. Everyone runs together, no matter whether you are Class AA or E. Boys varsity went out first. The early favorites, unless you were a Bulldog fan, were Manu Kumar from Yorktown and Rye's Max Robinson. At the start, Robinson sprinted off, getting a big lead on the rest of the pack. He held that lead through most of the race, with the other front pack runners slowly reeling him in as the miles clicked off. At one point Kumar made a move into second place and at the final hill leading to the plateau and finish line, Saliani made his move, gliding by both Kumar and Robinson unchallenged. Once he got up onto the flats, he continued to accelerate, opening a commanding lead to win the race convincingly and become, we believe, Irvington's first County Champion. Behind Julian, cudos to Taira Davey running aggressively and pulling the Bulldog pack up before he had to pay the price for expending the early speed. Dennis Montaruli was solid as was Sam Lindberg. Sean Lippin ran well and Zach Siegel had a terrific run too. Overall the boys did very well to place 7th out of 33 teams competing and number 1 of all Class C teams entered. The girls varsity, going off next was very competitive. Pelham's lead runner took the lead early on and simply extended it to win an excellent race, followed by Harrison's number one (and only). After that it was a blur of blue with Henrietta Myers leading the way for Bronxville as their girls team trounced the field, leading the next nearest team by some 70 points! Highlights in the leaders were Sleepy Hollows, Kathrine Doyle and Dobbs Ferrys Sarah King. First in for the Lady Dawgs was Annie Field at 11th, nipping Gina Talt from Mamaroneck at the wire. The girls ran without Edwina Picon and still did very well as the girls all seemed to have a good day on the tough course. Christina Paparo ran very strongly and looked almost ready to go out and do it again when she crossed the finish line. Megan Talay had a good race too. Courtney Buell and Liz "Homecoming" Hevern were very impressive as they both continued their streak of excellent races. Sasha "ZeeClock" Zwiebel did well after a turbulent morning, while Julia Canning also ran very well to help the team finish 10th out of 28 teams. JV boys continued to show promise for the future finishing 8th out of 20 teams. Tom Lindberg and Logan Muise finished in the medals at 16 and 17. Reid Mitchell continued showing strength with an excellent run for 34th. David Ehrenreich kicked strongly at the end, as did Kamran Saliani and Josh Bloom. Noah Turrett also ran very well. The medals kept coming as JV girls ran very well. Sara Moore had her best race of the season to take 7th and a medal. Aislinn also medaled with an excellent run and Clara Foung ran a strong race also. Joe Riley went out with the freshmen boys and medaled with an excellent 10th place run in a crowded race of 120 runners. The freshman girls race had a couple of Irvington girls in the medals too. Kira Murphy, who's had an excellent year was 7th overall and Alex Silvestre who has worked so hard all season really put it all together in her strongest run of the year to snag a ribbon (and medal) too. The next race is tomorrow's sectional championships which decide who will go to states. It will again be held at Bowdoin Park and should have some very exciting, close races. |
